You should see our pile of washing!

There's been such a good spate of excellent drying weather here in Melbourne, which has meant that we now have our entire nappy stash clean and dry at once. It has made us realise though, that we have a bit of a nappy problem - there are sooo many!

So how many nappies do you think makes up a good sized stash?
My recommendation has always been 24 as it means that you don't have to wash every 2 days (unless of course you have a mega wetter) and you don't have so many that they take over the house (like mine have). I first started with 15 and it was a real struggle. I had to wash every day in the early breastfed-only-poo stage, so we pretty quickly ramped up the stash. Clearly we now have too many, so somewhere in between must be the ideal.

Write in and tell us how many nappies you think makes the perfect stash, and really informative responses will be acknowledged with a $20 Cotton Bottom gift certificate.

I have about 40 in my stash. Theres probably 15 fitted nappies, my everyday main use nappy. 15 AIO's and AI2's for when I'm feeling 'lazy' and of course you HAVE to have the pretty 'show-off' nappies, so theres about 10 of those.

This means I only wash nappies every 2-3 days in summer and 1-2 in winter (as it takes a bit longer for them to dry in winter) =D It also means I have a nappy for every ocassion, including if he goes through a heavy wetting stage! perfect!

I'm like you Jess!! We started with 24 (a perfect number I think!). But then there were so many other brands to try, and it grew and grew, then I started working at Cotton Bottom and it grew some more! We must have close to 40 nappies, but my cousin is using cloth on her newborn so we have started passing the small ones on to her for her little baby. I think 24-30 is perfect (30 is good for 2 kids!)

I think the perfect stash all depends on the number of children you have in cloth, how often you want to wash your nappies & if you have a heavy wetter or not.
I have a 2yo in cloth & am expecting another baby in February. We currently have around 26 nappies of different brands & types. I do not use all of them though because my 2yo has grown out of some of them but these will be used when my new baby is born.
I cant believe how much we have saved by using cloth - especially since I can use these same nappies again for my new baby. Cloth nappies are super cute too & it is easy to become addicted to buying them!!

For me stash size is influenced by to how long my husband spends looking at the credit card bill. He must have seen some of the scary stories about stashes on the internet that I did, with photos of 70+ nappies for a child with one bum. As a most of the time cloth user I think about 22 nappies that fit is about right. Anything that is too big or too small does not count. This allows us to use between 4-7 cloth nappies a day and line dry inside during winter. Depending on how full the nappy bucket is I can wash every 2 or 3 days and avoid a stash crisis.

I have 24 MCN of various types, but because they're different it doesn't feel like I have enough. I never have a stash crisis (backup flats to the rescue), but I'm always thinking 'must save my AIOs for going out' and then running out of fitteds at home...

We tried a range of cloth nappies, including the prefolds, one-size-fits all nappies + covers, and then the sized AIOs. We like the sized AIOs the best as they weren't too bulky when our baby was little, and being an AIO they're so easy to use.

The AIO was also great when our daughter started childcare, the workers were a bit dubious at first, but once they realised we had AIOs they could see it was no more difficult than changing a disposable.

I think that 24 nappies is great. When you have a newborn you need to wash 12 each night and dry them the next day, but with an older baby 24 means you can wash every 2nd or 3rd day.

Washing every day wasn't a major hassle, we just had to get into a routine and put the nappies in the wash when we went to bed. I then hung them out after breakfast, or put them in the dryer if it was wet / cold outside.

Looking forward to saving some money and reusing the nappies when we have a 2nd baby :)

I started with 9 AIOs and a huge pile of Terry squares. As we were combining this with Elimination Communication (EC) I felt I could get by with a small econimically sound stash. I've recently just purchased 4 more AIOs and am slowly moving right away from the terry squares as my 4 mth old and I have a well established EC relationship. I find I can get by very easily with just 14 AIOs. The only bad thing about EC is that babies are so fast to toilet train and therefore not require any more beautiful nappies :P

I am very excited as we are coming to visit your shop before xmas. We are coming all the way from Sth Africa where we have very few cotton nappy options. We currently use a flat cotton nappy with water proof cover by bambino mio but it has a number of problems...it seems a bit prehistoric compared to some of the nappies i see on your site!
Anyway as for a good number of nappies: We have what you would describe as a high end nappy user, if he poohed or weed anymore I'm sure we would have to take him to the doctor! The only advantage of this is that all the wees and poohs are of moderate size! He doesn't save up any huge surprises!
We have 34 small and 3 large flat cotton nappies. We wash on average every second day (because the load is big enough!) We plan on getting another 6 large ones as we use these at night.
Having 34 small (daytime nappies)works very well for us and allows us to change his nappy before and after each nap (2- 3 per day) plus after his poohs which average 5 to 6 per day!
So our perfect size stash would be 34 small and 10 large. (and maybe a few extra AIOs for travelling and babysitters, although i have never seen these or used them but they look like a good idea!)

I found a big factor regarding how many nappies are needed is how your baby is fed. My 1st born was breastfed and easily went through 12 nappies a day. My 2nd who is 11 weeks old is formula fed and only poo's once per day so the amount of nappies is dramatically less, 6-7 per day. I use AIO during the day and fitted with wool cover for night. I only have my baby in nappies now and have 20 AIO and 4 fitted which is plenty for a formula fed bubs. It also depends if you use sized or OSFM, if using sized you will end up with a much bigger stash but not being able to use it all at all times. Of course this depends on how many kids you have/plan to have. There are many factors that affect your stash but I think the biggest one is addiction to MCN, there are just so many wonderful options that are hard to resist.

I have to admit we have over 60 different cloth nappies. Our first born was 5 weeks early, and weighed only 2.5kg at birth, so all of the "one size fits all" nappies I tried were WAY too big for her. This is how we ended up with so many nappies, trying out different types and all the different sizes. Almost all of our nappies are sized ones, so only fit for a certain time.
Now we are using them all on our second child, and they have also been promised for a friend to use them on her baby due June next year.
Lets help the environment, one nappy at a time!

The perfect stash size changes as baby gets older. Based on washing every second or third day I found that 20-24 really was a great stash for newborn up to about 6 months. From there as nappies needed to be changed less often I found 18-20 about right. Now my baby is in full toddler mode I am thinking about 15-18 is about right. Of course I have more, but that is because I have a nappy addiction problem!! The perfect stash size changes as baby gets older. Firstly THANKS heaps for supplying a brilliant option for us mummies that love our babies & our environment :0)
I started my newborn on 18 & found that perfect for her & I.
My two year old has just started in them & has 12 of his own. He's has great bowels so I stay on top of his washing & find that it's really no hassle even with running after my family of 5 & my own PT business. We also love how cute their bums look in the funky designs - Keep up your amazing work guys xxx
